Historic / Reuse
At Studio West, historic reuse is not just a design approach or expertise, but an act of stewardship and an integral value of our practice across our diverse portfolio. Our sensitivity to existing structures and architectural traditions guides our approach. Combining preservation practices with modern construction techniques, we create spaces that uphold their cultural integrity while being built to endure.
Leading the reconstruction of this important cultural building in the district where jazz was born in New Orleans in the late 19th century. Destroyed by Hurricane Ida in 2021, modern construction techniques and resilient building materials are combined with historic reconstruction methods to rebuild this storied structure.
Despite being the main identity and operational hub for the St. George campus, Studio West revitalizes Porteous Hall to overcome limited accessibility, visibility, and flexibility for its visitors and students. Through coordinated design interventions that enhance the exterior and interior spaces, this public landmark remains a reflection of the school's core values as an inclusive and welcoming environment for children to learn and grow.
As one of the city’s few remaining historic public markets, Studio West performed comprehensive improvements to this multi-functional civic space - home to students and the community alike. With renovations to the kitchen and forum, including well-needed improvements to the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, the design for Jefferson Market continues to serve the broader community.
