A thoughtful adaptation of an existing historic residence
Located in the Faubourg Marigny, this three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath historic residence was purchased by its current owners with the intent of leaving the historic features intact and enhancing the first and second floors for contemporary living. Formerly a mid-block commercial shop on the ground floor with a residence above, the building had been converted to a single-family residence by a previous owner.
The floor plan was carefully reconfigured to create an easy-living, New Orleans home for a couple always on the move hosting lots of friends in New Orleans, their two dogs, and showcasing their passion for collecting wine and art. The focal point of the first floor is a new walnut wood and mirror bar, designed around the existing entrance stair to the street-facing living space. It houses the owners’ extensive wine collection and love of tiki cocktails. Envisioned as the threshold between the entrance and the living room, residents and guests pass through the walnut-framed opening, down several steps, and into a full-service bar with antique mirror and a rolling ladder for access to the higher shelves. Studio West also designed a new pressed-tin ceiling for the living room. A nod to the historic shop space at the first floor.

Living spaces centered around owners’ passion for wine
The existing building was an unusual layout starting with a raised vestibule entrance spilling into two disconnected living rooms a kitchen, and 1920’s combo power room / laundry room. Studio West modified the first-floor plan to relocate the laundry to the second floor, add a new powder room tucked under the stairs, which allowed for a spacious living room at the front on the house. A new window and cased open were restored, to connect the first floor living and dining space and provide maximum daylight.
At the second floor, Studio West worked with the new owners to combine two rooms into a luxurious primary suite on the Spain street-side which opens directly onto the existing wood and cast-iron gallery. A new primary bathroom was constructed as part of the suite across from the primary bedroom with a custom marble mosaic tiled shower and custom cherry wood drawers. Custom cherry wood millwork closets and mini bar were added to the primary suite to provide material continuity throughout. The result is a calming, daylit suite as a retreat to start the and end the day.
Other details in the home included restoring the existing slate tile floors after being covered with carpet. Studio West selected and procured all furniture and furnishings which were carefully coordinated with the owners existing artwork and antique collection.
